![]() ![]() The Take 5 uses the SSI2130 VCO oscillators, and offers Sine wave out, which will be a good option for Frequency Modulation (FM). Most of the same oscillator territory can be achieved, but each synth can do some oscillator generation that the other cannot. Also, the VCOs on the Take 5 are continously variable waveshapes from Sine, Saw, Square/Pulse, whereas the Prophet 5r4 features button switchable shapes that can be mixed. ![]() This is one of the character contributors to the vintage P5 sound. It is possible that Per Key allocation could be added to Take 5 via firmware update. The Prophet 5r4 does have a Per-Key voice allocation option, like the vintage Prophet 5s, and at this time the Take 5 only offers Round Robin voice allocation. With 5 voices, VCOs, the SSI2140 Prophet 5r4 filter, and vintage knob, it appears this synth will be able to sound very similar to the Prophet 5r4. The Take 5 is more of a basic portable poly synth, built around the Prophet 5 sound palette. The Pro 3 is really a flagship mono/para synth - the most versatile analog mono synth ever created. Pro 3 has a third wavetable oscillator, three filters, four envelopes, four LFOs, a huge 32-slot mod matrix, and the incredible 64 step poly and modulation sequencer with 16 tracks. Pro 3 has a much deeper sound engine, but in mono/para territory. The Take 5 is less of a Pro family member, and more of a Prophet family member. While it is visually similar to the Pro 3 synth, these two synths should not be compared. Here's our first take on comparisons with other Sequential synths: When you have finished, navigate to User Bank 2 and try out the new programs. The next synth from Sequential appears to be the Take 5.Send the program bank to the Pro 3 (refer to the documentation for your MIDI utility).Use a MIDI utility such as SysEx Librarian (Mac) or MIDI-OX (Windows) to open the bank of 128 programs (“Pro 3 Add-on Program Bank”).To load the bank of 128 new programs into the Pro 3: You can download these try out the new wavetables. Sound Designer Drew Neumann has also created a new bank of 128 Pro 3 programs that utilize these wavetables. On a PC running MIDI-OX, set “delay after F7” to 700ms. On a Mac running Sysex Librarian, set “Pause Between Played Messages” to 700ms. To load multiple wavetables consecutively, you must set a delay between each SysEx file.Send all 32 wavetables to the Pro 3 (refer to the documentation for your MIDI utility).Use a MIDI utility such as SysEx Librarian (Mac) or MIDI-OX (Windows) to open all 32 wavetables. On the Pro 3, press the Global button, then press Soft Button 2 and set “MIDI SysEx Cable” to “USB.” Press the Global button again to exit.Connect the Pro 3 to your computer with a USB cable. To load custom wavetables into the Pro 3: You’ll need a USB cable (Type A to Type B connectors, like a typical USB printer cable) to transmit the SysEx file from your computer to the Pro 3. MIDI-OX (Windows) and SysEx Librarian (Mac OS) are shareware MIDI utilities that you can use to do this. To load new wavetables into user slots 33-64, you will need a DAW, MIDI utility, or other application capable of opening and sending MIDI System Exclusive (SysEx) messages. On a PC running MIDI-OX, set “delay after F7” to 700ms To load multiple wavetables consecutively, you must set a delay between each SysEx file. Be sure to reset Global parameters using the “Reset Globals” command in the Commands tab of the Global parameters menu. You must load all 32 of the new wavetables before loading the new bank of 128 sound programs since the programs use the new wavetables. If Bank 2 already has custom programs that you want to preserve, use a MIDI Utility to save them to your computer before loading the new bank of 128 custom programs. ![]() The accompanying bank of 128 programs loads into User Bank 2. They will not overwrite the factory wavetables. These wavetables will load into wavetable slots 33-64, which are reserved for user wavetables. The sidebar has a downloadable set of 32 new wavetables (“Pro 3 Add-on Wavetables”) and an accompanying bank of 128 programs by sound designer Drew Neumann (“Pro 3 Add-on Programs”).
